The Beginning

Welcome to my blog.

For those who don't know me, I'm Bruce Jones, novelist, screenwriter, comic book writer/artist, and painter--not the surfboard, race car driver or actor, though I did do some TV modeling. Look for those other guys elsewhere and their own problems with a name like "Jones."

I've had several gallery showings over the years both here and abroad, but never one with a direct theme. Recently I've started a series of oil paintings called NAKED IN SUBURBIA. The art pretty much speaks for itself, I hope, but does contain a rich background and unique heritage. I'll investigate this more in the future.

Pictured above, meanwhile, is a small sample from the forthcoming book NAKED IN SUBURBIA, The Curious Era of the Mid-Century Housewife Model. It's a personal ode to a lost generation--our parent's wives and neighbors. Sometimes reluctant, certainly unwitting but almost heart-achingly innocent, they created a guileless but genuine American art form. This was the girl-next-door predating Hefner's airbrushed playmates, the blushing bride or new mother cajoled and teased into "just this once" posing by husbands and boyfriends armed with the family Brownie. The compositions were rushed and clumsy, films speeds and lighting beyond inferior...yet somehow flush with the extemporary passion of the moment. The results were a candid vision of amateur allure impossible to replicate with the current technology and collective consciousness.

I hope I've done it justice through my personal sensibilities and graphics...underscoring that even in the most unlikely of settings, art knows no boundaries. And a young woman's beauty endures and endears beyond time and fashion.

The first six paintings in the series can be found at my new website:
The Art of Bruce Jones
along with further information including purchasing info for those interested.

Thanks for tuning in and sharing and I hope you enjoy this take on a too brief, naughty-but-nice post war epoch whose bevy of tract home sweethearts still haunt our secret dreams.
